Most people think of the states of California, Oregon and Washington when someone mentions American wine country regions, but the state of Missouri is quickly coming into its own as a top-quality wine producing location. The wine industry in Missouri was founded by German immigrants during the middle part of the 19th century, both with grapes that they brought with them from the Old Country and with grapes that were being cultivated at the time by Native Americans. Missouri grew to be the second biggest wine producing state in the country before Prohibition crippled the majority of the U.S. wine industry. Following are descriptions of three fine wineries in the Farmington, Missouri area.
Twin Oaks WinerySituated on 180 acres near Farmington, Twin Oaks Winery has been in operation since the year 2000. The dream of two brothers, family members still perform the majority of the work involved in running the winery, and it is not unusual to see the entire family picking grapes together during the harvest season. The tasting room at Twin Oaks is located in the middle of the vineyard next to a fountain, offering guests a sublime location which to enjoy a glass of wine, beer or even a classic cocktail. Because of the surrounding natural beauty and abundant hospitality of the hosts, Twin Oaks is an excellent place to hold special events such as weddings and retirement celebrations.Papas Winery

Another popular Farmington winery with a family oriented ambiance is Papas Winery. Papas is a combination vineyard, gourmet cafe and wine bar and even features a pond on the property where guests can fish. A playground is available for the enjoyment of the little ones while their parents savor a glass of Stellas Sweet Papas Red other premium wine produced by the vineyard. Fabulous food is available s well as live music, and chilly evenings on the veranda are warmed by a nearby fire pit.

Sand Creek Winery

Among the newest family owned and operated vineyards near Farmington, Missouri, is nestled in the rolling hills off of St. Francois County. The Sand Creek Winery has been open since 2008 and features a stunningly artistic cupola rising above a large stone bar. This is another excellent choice to hold private parties and to celebrate special events. Live entertainment as well as lunch and dinner are available on weekends. Visitors are welcome to enjoy picnics on the veranda while tasting a variety of Sand Creek’s excellent wines.

Just an hour south of St. Louis lies the biggest underground freshwater lake in the world. Bonne Terre Mine, in Bonne Terre, Missouri, was a working lead ore mine from 1860 until its closing in 1962. When it closed, it was the largest lead mine in the world. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The “Billion Gallon Lake” stretches 17 miles long, with depths over 100 feet. Its constant water temperature, 58-degrees, and never-changing conditions make the lake ideal for diving, whether you are a novice or an expert. Knowledgeable, safety-conscious divemasters are with you every “step” of the way. Fully illuminated overhead with powerful lights, visibility is astonishing. The water is crystal-clear, with massive pillars of rock rising up from the lake and cavern floor. Two dozen diving trails are laid out for the diver, each showcasing mammoth arches, calcium falls, and old, abandoned mining artifacts and tools-of-the-trade.

If diving isn’t your thing, the mine offers walking tours with knowledgeable guides. Walk down 65 steps to go through old mule trails, and see where miners fervently worked with picks and shovels to free the lead ore.

To see even more of this spectacular natural wonder, sign up for a boat tour. The tour takes you through the largest part of the mine, where you can see mining equipment, shafts, ore carts, and stunning geological beauty just below the water’s surface. Overhead, witness the long-abandoned, rickety catwalks that traverse the cave up to 100 feet above the lake.

The mine is open daily May through October, and on the weekends in winter. They also have a souvenir shop with lots of interesting gifts and mining memorabilia.

When you are done with the day’s activities, lodging is available up top at the Bonne Terre Depot, an old Queen Anne style bed and breakfast built in 1909 and lovingly restored in 1989. The bed and breakfast has four guest rooms, and two unique suites in detached railway cars. Wet your whistle, and drink in the nostalgia at the Whistle Stop Saloon.

For family fun and adventure, Bonne Terre Mine, listed on “National Geographic’s Top Ten Adventures,” is an unforgettable must see!

April 20 2013 marks the third yearly Run/Walk/Ride with Walker for the town of Farmington Missouri. An event hosting the true spirit of charity and remembrance if ever there was one, this occasion is in the honor of someone very special.
Two years ago a young man named Walker Johns lost in a battle against Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, and left this world behind. Those who knew Walker best could readily praise his shining spirit, and were familiar only too well with his radiant soul. Rising above the shroud of grief, Family and friends banded together to form an organization that would assure the memory of young Walker never to fade: the Walker Johns Childhood Cancer Foundation.WJCCF is dedicated to several kinds of aid:

*Raising and dispensing funds to families who have children with cancer.

*Emboldening those families to find the fortitude to rise up and grasp a perception of place and normality in their community.

*Creating awareness, and raising up alliances by laboring with other communities to attain a shared objective.

This benevolent effort was undertaken with the hope of offering relief to people in the surrounding area who live on with an ill child, or even for those without children.

And that is what this Run/Walk/Ride is all about. The WJCCF is hosting this event, which will include a 5K family fun run, 5K and 10K for time, and a fifteen mile timed bike route. Medals will be awarded, and there will also be food. Coordinators are currently seeking sponsors and participants. Sponsors and businesses can be represented on the special t-shirts of the foundation for a minimum donation of $100.

The WJCCF proudly dedicates this year’s run to the following persons:

The Tyler Harris family, who also lost their son in the battle against Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.

Alexis Henson, a 10 year old with Rhabdomyosarcoma. By reason of a relapse, Alexis is in the midst of treatment.

Brandon Krausch, who is 14 and has a glioneural tumor. He faces surgery in April.

Tyler Bohnenkamp, who is 16 and has Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. This young man strives to lead an adolescent life with monthly visits to the Children’s Hospital in St. Louis, where he receives continued treatments.

Lucas Whitehead, who is 6 and has been diagnosed with Wilm’s tumor. He is currently very active in treatments.

On April 20, 2013 the Farmington Civic Center will host Grandmaster Han’s 19th Annual Martial Arts Tournament. Sponsored by Shoeman Water Projects, the Holiday Inn Express, and the Hampton Inn this engaging tournament will feature three main martial arts components: forms, sparring, and breaking.

History of Grandmaster Han’s Annual Martial Arts Tournament

Grandmaster Han is an extremely well-respected figure in the field of martial arts. His resume is an impressive one consisting of extensive training in all of the following fields: Youn Wha Ryu, Kung Fu, Judo, Kendo, and Tai Kwon Do. Han is also professionally trained in many weapons including throwing stars, rope, double sticks, and many more.

In addition, Han has worked with the United States government to assist in creating hand to hand combat training programs for the military. He is an impressive figure in his field and so the tournament was established in his name in 1994 and has since been held every year in different states and centers throughout the nation.

Information about the Tournaments’ Participants and Events

Participants in this tournament are of all ages and specialize in one or more of the events that will be showcased throughout the day. They are skilled martial artists who have trained in various facilities throughout the country. Many of them have trained in one of Grandmaster Han’s martial arts centers as there are many scattered throughout the United States.

The three areas of competition are: forms, sparring, and breaking. Forms and sparring are essentially the same thing in martial arts and consist of varying types including Tai Kwon Do, Judo, and Kendo. When different forms are paired against one another it is called mixed martial arts and varying levels of contact are established in the rules prior to sparring. Breaking is when the martial artists uses their hand, foot, head, or other body part to break an object such as a wooden board.

Whether you are a fan of martial arts, live in the area, or simply looking for an entertaining way to spend the day this event is worth checking out. The Farmington Civic Center is located at 2 Knight Drive in Farmington, Missouri and the event will take place from 10:00 am until 6:00 pm at the center.

In a joint effort between Gateway Disc Sports and the City of Farmington, an 18 hole par 62 disc golf course was developed in Engler Park. The course features a shorter technical front nine with a nice par, four on hole nine with the lake coming into play on the drive and again by the basket. The back nine is a much longer and more challenging course that will rival any nine holes in the state. A tourney layout will feature an island green and some very tough shots; especially from the long tees.

Disc golf is played much like traditional golf. Instead of a ball and clubs, however, players use a flying disc. The sport was formalized in the 1970′s, and shares with “ball golf” the object of completing each hole in the fewest number of strokes (or, in the case of disc golf, fewest number of throws). A golf disc is thrown from a tee area to a target which is the “hole”. the hole can be one of a number of disc golf targets; the most common is called a Pole Hole® an elevated metal basket. As a player progresses down the fairway, he or she must make each consecutive shot from the spot where the previous throw has landed. The trees, shrubs, and terrain changes located in and around the fairways provide challenging obstacles for the golfer. Finally, the “putt” lands in the basket and the hole is completed. Disc golf shares the same joys and frustrations of traditional golf, whether it’s sinking a long putt or hitting a tree halfway down the fairway. There are few differences, though. Disc golf is free in Farmington and you never get stuck with a bad “tee time.” It is designed to be enjoyed by people of all ages, male and female, regardless of economic status.
